SUMMARY:Deeper Than the Ocean: A Conversation with Mirta Ojito
DESCRIPTION:Miami Author Series \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdmission is $20. Members attend free. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n REGISTER \n \n\n\n\nJoin the Museum of Miami for a fireside chat with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Mirta Ojito as she discusses her acclaimed novel Deeper Than the Ocean. A sweeping story of family\, migration\, love\, and the secrets that can reshape everything we thought we knew about where we come from. \n\n\n\nOjito’s dual narrative brings history and memory together\, exploring the ways migration\, family stories\, and buried secrets can echo across generations. During the conversation\, Ojito will share the inspiration behind Deeper Than the Ocean and discuss the history\, places\, and human stories woven throughout the novel. \n\n\n\nFollowing the conversation\, Ojito will be available for a book signing. Books & Books–Coral Gables will be on-site with copies of Deeper Than the Ocean available for purchase. \n\n\n\nMembers must sign in for free registration to take effect. \n\n\n\nThe program is presented in connection with the Museum of Miami’s exhibition Caught in the Eye: Remembering the 1926 Hurricane. \n\n\n\nBook Partnership with \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMirta Ojito is a journalist\, professor and author of two previous non-fiction books. A refugee from Cuba\, her work often explores the complexities of identity\, belonging\, and the quiet power of resilience. She lives in Coral Gables\, Florida\, where she is endlessly inspired—and occasionally outnumbered—by her three grown sons and too many plants. Deeper than the Ocean is her first novel. \n\n\n\nHer work has appeared in several anthologies\, including Written into History: Pulitzer Prize Reporting of the Twentieth Century from The New York Times\, edited by Anthony Lewis. Ojito has taught journalism at New York University\, Columbia University\, and the University of Miami. SUMMARY:City Tour—History in the Grove Walking Tour: The Barnacle to El Jardin
DESCRIPTION:Explore the history of Coconut Grove\, the land across from the light\, with HistoryMiami Museum’s Resident Historian\, Dr. Paul George. Visit The Barnacle\, Commodore Ralph Munroe’s home built during the Era of the Bay\, and learn about the Coconut Grove Playhouse\, a former movie palace turned live theater venue. View architectural delights\, including El Jardin and Plymouth Congregational Church.  \n\n\n\nTicket includes complimentary pass to Museum of Miami. \n\n\n\nMembers: $25\, Non-Members: $35\, Children 14 & Under: $15\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers & Sites:\n\n\n\n\nPaul S. George\, Ph.D.Resident Historian\n\n\n\nFor over three decades\, Museum of Miami’s Resident Historian Dr. Paul S. George has toured his way to local\, national\, and international acclaim with his continuing series of historic tours. Through walking\, coach\, and boat tour experiences\, Dr. George has welcomed tour participants on a memorable journey of South Florida through its historic neighborhoods\, landmarks\, and sites. As a Miami native\, author\, and former college professor\, Dr. George has gained fame for his uncanny ability to recall the most impressive details about the people and places that make South Florida so unique. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Barnacle Historic State Park\n\n\n\nBuilt in 1891\, The Barnacle offers a glimpse of frontier life during the Era of the Bay\, when all travel to and from Miami was by sea. Situated on the shore of Biscayne Bay\, this was the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe\, one of Coconut Grove’s most charming and influential pioneers. Munroe preserved the forest on his land\, cutting out only a winding buggy trail through the hammock — barely wide enough for one vehicle. As a result\, the property contains many large\, old trees. Left in its natural state\, The Barnacle Historic State Park appears much as it did in Munroe’s day. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Information\n\n\n\nPlease see below for additional information regarding the tour.
