SUMMARY:Via Zoom – Panel Discussion: The Evolving Perspectives on Swimwear
DESCRIPTION:From the 18th century to present day\, women’s swimwear has experienced an incomparable transformation. The story of this fashion garment is one that involves social\, political\, and technological changes. Join Margot Mifflin and Dr. Sunny Xiang in conversation with Dr. Jillian Hernandez for an empowering discussion delving into the history and societal influences that shape our perception of swimwear as a tool for cultural change. \n\n\n\nPresented in conjunction with the exhibition Waves of Style — Swimwear through the Decades. \n\n\n\nParticipants will receive Zoom webinar link a week prior to the program. \n\n\n\nMembers: FREE\, Non-Members: $10\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Program Flyer \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLive captioning is available on this program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Moderator & Speakers:\n\n\n\n\nJillian Hernandez\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\nJillian Hernandez\, Ph.D.\, is a curator and scholar of contemporary visual art\, popular culture\, and style. Her book Aesthetics of Excess: The Art and Politics of Black and Latina Embodiment was published by Duke University Press and her most recent exhibition\, Liberatory Adornment: Pamela Council\, Yvette Mayorga\, Kenya (Robinson)\, was on view in 2021 at the Flaten Art Museum. She is currently working on a second book project\, High Maintenance Feminism\, that examines how artists and cultural workers are asserting value and demanding care in a post-2020 context. A public-facing scholar\, Hernandez has launched Full Set Project\, a team of researchers who study and document the impact of nail culture (@fullsetproject) and the video podcast FEM STUDY on her YouTube channel. She has published art reviews and culture articles for Refinery29\, Intervenxions\, and Latina magazine\, and has recently contributed to the exhibition catalogue for The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century and Documenting the Nameplate: Jewelry\, Culture\, and Identity. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Gender\, Sexuality\, and Women’s Studies at the University of Florida. She is the founder of Women on the Rise!\, a project that created art and facilitated critical conversations with teenage girls in Miami from 2004 through 2015 at the Museum of Contemporary Art. \n\n\n\n\n\nMargot Mifflin\n\n\n\nMargot Mifflin is an author\, journalist\, and professor at Lehman College of the City University of New York who writes about women’s history and the arts. She wrote the first history of western women’s tattooing\, Bodies of Subversion: A Secret History of Women and Tattoo (PowerHouse Books)\, and the definitive biography of Olive Oatman\, The Blue Tattoo the Life of Olive Oatman (University of Nebraska Press). Her most recent book\, Looking for Miss America: A Pageant’s 100-Year Quest to Define Womanhood (Counterpoint Press) is a feminist history of the Miss America pageant. \n\n\n\n\n\nSunny Xiang\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\nSunny Xiang studies and teaches race\, war\, and empire through wide-ranging aesthetic\, cultural\, literary\, and documentary materials. She is particularly interested in the methodological questions and perceptual challenges introduced by U.S. military empire in Asia and the Pacific during the mid-twentieth century. Her first book Tonal Intelligence: The Aesthetics of Asian Inscrutability During the Long Cold War was published by Columbia University Press in 2020. Her current project\, Chemical Apophenia: Air Conspiracies and Skin Connections in the Toxic Tropics\, explores how U.S. WWII military science in the Pacific theater generated new paradigms for detecting and combating toxicity in the air– and on the skin. In understanding war\, empire\, and science as not only structures of power but also regimes of perception and styles of knowing\, Xiang’s scholarship shows how aesthetic and cultural approaches can create surprising conversations across Asian American studies\, Pacific studies\, critical militarization studies\, and feminist science studies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Information\n\n\n\nPlease see below for additional information regarding the program. SUMMARY:Sold Out - Stiltsville & Key Biscayne Sunset Cruise
DESCRIPTION:Join Museum of Miami’s Resident Historian\, Dr. Paul George\, as he recounts the history of Biscayne Bay. Discover the storied past of Stiltsville\, a series of colorful wooden houses built on the flats of the bay and located inside Biscayne National Park. Known in the 1940’s\, 50’s and 60’s as a playground for the wealthy and well-connected\, Stiltsville was once home to the now infamous Crawfish Eddies and Bikini Club. Learn how this once vivacious community on stilts dwindled down to the seven houses that remain today. Dr. George will narrate and share stories of nefarious gangsters\, stunning graffiti\, and fabulous parties while guests cruise past the Cape Florida Lighthouse\, Key Biscayne\, and the City of Miami. Today\, Biscayne National Park and the Stiltsville Trust work together to support the preservation of the remaining Stiltsville houses so that future generations can experience its unique history. \n\n\n\nWater and soda service is included in the ticket price. Additional light snacks and drinks are available for purchase from Island Queen Cruises. \n\n\n\nThis program is sold out with no waitlist. SUMMARY:HM Toast to the Classics: Where the Boys Are (1960)
DESCRIPTION:Step into the golden age of spring break with the kickoff of HM Toast to the Classics\, our new film series celebrating iconic movies set in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. We’re kicking things off with the 1960 spring break classic\, Where The Boys Are\, a sun-soaked\, coming-of-age comedy that follows four college friends from Penmore University who head south searching for sunshine\, adventure\, and maybe even a little romance. DESCRIPTION:Explore the photography of Annette and Rudi Rada with curator and University of Miami professor\, Dr. Victor Deupi. Gain new insights into the exhibition as you take a closer look at some of the featured works. \n\n\n\nPresented in conjunction with the exhibition Annette and Rudi Rada: Photographing Mid-Century South Florida and the Caribbean. \n\n\n\nAnnette and Rudi Rada: Photographing Mid-Century South Florida and the Caribbean celebrates the renowned husbandand-wife photographer duo\, Annette and Rudi Rada\, whose work has profoundly shaped our understanding of South Florida and the Caribbean during the latter half of the 20th century. Through nearly three decades of prolific documentation\, the Radas captured the architectural and societal transformations that defined Miami’s evolution from a post-war city to a tropical metropolis. Their photography not only chronicles the rise of distinctive regional styles but also offers a nuanced perspective on mid-century life. The exhibition delves into their impactful portrayals of Miami’s modern\, tropical vernacular\, their ethnographic exploration of indigenous communities\, and the cultural dynamics of the Caribbean and South America. \n\n\n\nCapacity is limited. Wallace\n\n\n\nDorothy M. Wallace was born in Morocco\, Missouri and later moved to Miami with her family in 1951. She holds a Batchelor’s Degree from Lincoln University and attended University of Miami’s School of Education\, becoming one of the first two African Americans to receive a Master’s Degree in 1963 from the university.
