SUMMARY:Conversation: What Is Miami To You?
DESCRIPTION:Via Zoom. Free with registration.\nRegister here to receive Zoom log-in information.\nJoin artists Rosa Naday Garmendia\, Asser Saint-Val\, and Izia Lindsay for an informal conversation about the multifaceted identity of Wall’N Mural Collective and how the ever-changing City of Miami inspired their most recent project. Moderated by Rosie Gordon-Wallace Founder\, Curator\, and Director of Diaspora Vibe Gallery and Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator.\n\nAbout the artists:\n\n\n\nRosa Naday Garmendia is a socially engaged\, multidisciplinary artist working with an array of mediums\, including\, but not limited to; painting\, drawing\, fabric\, collage\, photography\, and site-specific installations.  Her art making process is fed by her experiences as a woman\, an immigrant and an industrial worker\, which have shaped her ideas about injustice.  She is inspired by her personal relationship to colonization and the disrupted genealogies that come forth as a result.  As an artist\, she considers her practice a daily act of resistance. Garmendia\, born in Havana\, Cuba\, immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of 8.  She has pursued her fine art studies at various universities and art institutes\, including University of South Florida\, Parsons School of Design\, University of Miami\, Vermont Studio  Center\,  and  the  Fort  Lauderdale Art Institute. She has exhibited in Miami as well as New York\, Cuba\, Guadeloupe and Suriname.\n\nAsser Saint-Val is a painter\, sculptor and installation artist. His quasi-figurative images\, by turns humorous and grotesque\, bring together ideas\, people and incidents central to modern debates about the definition and valence off Neuromalanin.  Rendered in a blend of traditional art mediums and a wide range  of unconventional\,  organic  materials  —coffee\,  chocolate\,  ginger\,  tea  and  chocolate  among  them—his  pictures\,   objects   and   environments   are   a   surreal   fantasia   on   such   loosely   linked   themes   as  under-recognized  African  American  inventors\,  the  politics  of  sexual  desire\,  and  the  complex aesthetics\,  narratives and metaphors that attach to the organic compounds neuromelanin.\n\nIzia Lindsay is a mixed-media artist from the twin island of Trinidad and Tobago.  He holds an MFA in multimedia from the University of Miami. His artwork addresses symbolism in Caribbean iconography that is rooted in tradition but interpreted with contemporary ideas. Caribbean iconography is used as a basis to create his multi-layered artistic narratives. He uses bold\, geometric shapes that juxtapose and intersperse to form his pieces.  The thematic whole is an epic narrative reproducing the dualities of his turbulent\, cosmopolitan\, Caribbean life. Lindsay has also been working in the creative industry for over ten years and is an adjunct lecturer at the University of Miami and Florida International University.\n\nModerator\n\nRosie Gordon-Wallace is Founder\, Curator\, and Director of Diaspora Vibe Gallery and Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator. Since 1996\, Gordon-Wallace has initiated and produced transnational creative programs that redefine concepts of “diaspora” including the International Cultural Exchange program\, the Caribbean Crossroads Series\, the Artist-In-Residence program\, an ongoing contemporary exhibitions program\, and numerous community-based outreach projects. One might never have guessed that this licensed Medical Microbiologist and former Senior Consultant for Searle Pharmaceuticals from 1981 -1999 is now the founder and senior curator of Diaspora Vibe\, one of the most talked about Caribbean art incubators in Miami and on the east coast. Gordon –Wallace\, always a passionate lover of art\, made up her mind in 1999 to devote herself full time to the gallery she created and developed.\n\n \n\nIn partnership with    \n\n\n\n Open Captioning available during this program.\nAccessibility\nTo request materials in accessible format\, sign language interpreters\, and/or any disability accommodation\, please contact Hana Squires\, Accessibility Coordinator\, at accessibility@museumofmiami.org or call (305) 375-1621 at least two weeks in advance of your visit to initiate your request.
