SUMMARY:10 Days of Connection: Miami Story Exchange
DESCRIPTION:What is a story exchange? This is an opportunity to exchange personal anecdotes with others and connect deeply. We’ll ask you to sit with a stranger\, tell your story\, then listen to theirs. We will reconvene as a group and each participant will retell their partner’s story in the first person. At the end of the program\, you’ll have an opportunity to reflect on your experience and record your story in our Miami Stories Recording Booth (this is optional). \n\n\n\nWe will be sharing stories about Miami! Take a look at your photos (either physical copies or on your smartphone) and choose a photo that captures a Miami-specific story. During the workshop\, you’ll be asked to share this photo and why it’s meaningful. Here are some prompts to guide you: \n\n\n\n-     Share a photo of a childhood memory in Miami \n\n\n\n-     Share a photo of when you first arrived in Miami \n\n\n\n-     Share a photo of your favorite place in Miami \n\n\n\n-     Share a photo that feels uniquely Miami \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCapacity is limited and registration is required. \n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\nThis Connection Event is organized by the museum’s Miami Stories initiative. The Miami Stories initiative collects stories about Miami’s past\, present\, and future. Through this oral history project\, Museum of Miami documents life in the Magic City through both written submissions and audio recordings\, which are preserved in the museum’s archive\, and shared online and through local media outlets.

SUMMARY:Stiltsville & Key Biscayne Cruise with Dr. George
DESCRIPTION:Join Museum of Miami’s Resident Historian\, Dr. Paul George\, as he recounts the history of Biscayne Bay. Discover the storied past of Stiltsville\, a series of colorful wooden houses built on the flats of the bay and located inside Biscayne National Park. Dr. George will narrate and share stories of notorious gangsters\, stunning graffiti\, and fabulous parties while guests cruise past the Cape Florida Lighthouse\, Key Biscayne\, and the City of Miami. \n\n\n\nToday\, Biscayne National Park and the Stiltsville Trust work together to support the preservation of the remaining Stiltsville houses so that future generations are able to experience its unique history. \n\n\n\nIndividual charcuterie boxes from Miami Grazing Company will be served. Water and soda service included in ticket price. Additional light snacks and drinks available for purchase from Island Queen Cruises. SUMMARY:14th Annual Presidential Symposium - Florida and the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:Museum Member Attendee: Free Non-Member Attendee: $25 Students (with school ID) $10 \n\n\n\nSymposium Overview: \n\n\n\nWhen most Americans think of the Civil War\, Virginia battlefields or Sherman’s march through Georgia likely come to mind. But Florida\, one of the first states to secede\, played several key roles in the war. A hotbed of slavery\, it was the site of a bitterly contested federal fort\, its vast coastline proved nearly impossible for the Union to blockade\, and it saw an important battle – Olustee – where atrocities against Union soldiers of color were committed. In this thought-provoking conference\, leading historians will explore the issues of slavery and freedom\, battles and leaders\, and war and reconstruction in Florida – one of the last states to cling to rebellion and slavery. The Presidential Symposium will take place from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and a reception will follow from 4:00-5:30 p.m. Pre-registration is recommended as seating is limited. \n\n\n\nOur Moderator & Panelists:\n\n\n\n\nHarold Holzer\, ModeratorJonathan F.
