SUMMARY:Stiltsville & Key Biscayne Cruise with Dr. George
DESCRIPTION:Join Museum of Miami’s Resident Historian\, Dr. Paul George\, as he recounts the history of Biscayne Bay. Discover the storied past of Stiltsville\, a series of colorful wooden houses built on the flats of the bay and located inside Biscayne National Park. Known in the 1940’s\, 50’s and 60’s as a playground for the wealthy and well-connected\, Stiltsville was once home to the now infamous Crawfish Eddies and Bikini Club. Learn how this once vivacious community on stilts dwindled down to the seven houses that remain today. Dr. George will narrate and share stories of nefarious gangsters\, stunning graffiti\, and fabulous parties while guests cruise past the Cape Florida Lighthouse\, Key Biscayne\, and the City of Miami. \n\n\n\nToday\, Biscayne National Park and the Stiltsville Trust work together to support the preservation of the remaining Stiltsville houses so that future generations are able to experience its unique history. \n\n\n\nWater and soda service included in ticket price. We hope this class inspires you to dive deeper into the diverse history of South Florida and the people who made it their home. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Area’s Early History\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n This lecture will focus on the area’s indigenous peoples\, who lived here at least 10\,000 years ago. Important archaeological discoveries along the Miami River and near Biscayne Bay in the past half century have opened our eyes to this fact. Others who will be discussed here include the Tequesta Indians\, arguably the descendants of the first peoples\, Spanish missions to the Tequesta and Seminoles\, who came to South Florida in the early 1700s\, and played a consequential role in shaping its development in subsequent centuries.	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Homesteading Era\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Before there was a city of Miami\, there were numerous homesteading communities that dotted the areas looking out upon Biscayne Bay in the second half of the nineteenth century. Although these settlements were small in size\, they were consequential in laying the foundations for not only the future City of Miami\, but also other important centers of vast Miami-Dade County. These pioneers helped give direction to the evolving communities following the railroad’s entry into Miami in the late 19th century.	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Incorporation and The Early Years of the City of Miami\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n The entry of Henry M. Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway in Miami in 1896 brought monumental changes to the area\, since it connected it by land\, for the first time\, to points north. The City of Miami grew quickly after the rail’s entry and influenced the development of many other portions of the county. Early on the nascent city was a magnet for various races and ethnic groups. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Boom/Bust and the 1920s\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n The great real estate boom of the mid-1920s transformed Miami and its environs from a frontier city surrounded by several agricultural settlements into an emerging metropolitan area. For the first time\, the area was in the national limelight\, as visitors and investors rushed to its sunny shores to get rich in real estate ventures. New communities like Coral Gables\, Miami Springs and Miami Shores were products of the Boom. The bust that followed in 1926 and thereafter previewed for the nation the Great Depression that descended upon it following the stock market crash in 1929. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Depression and War\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Despite challenging economic conditions\, the Depression Decade was eventful\, with Greater Miami experiencing growth in many sectors while positioning itself as a major tourist and aviation center. Further\, the area arose from the economic quagmire more quickly than much of the rest of the nation. \nGreater Miami thrived in the wartime decade of the 1940s\, serving as an immense training base for hundreds of thousands of men and women in uniform\, while positioning itself through its exposure to many who migrated here after the conflict. \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Post-WWII Boom\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n The construction\, population\, and tourism booms that followed the end of World War II drove the area to new heights\, placing it squarely in the front ranks of America’s metropolitan regions. Areas that were still swampland and piney woods before the war were now hosting new suburban communities. A robust airport and seaport exposed millions over the course of the postwar decades to the magic of the Magic City. Beneath the gloss of this sparkling area\, minorities were fighting for rights\, environmentalists were lobbying for the protection of its unique ecology\, and law enforcement agencies were tamping down on spiraling crime. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Emergence of an International City\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n Miami and Dade County recognized early in their development that geography often determines destiny. The area’s close proximity to Cuba\, the Caribbean\, the West Indies and even South America made it a haven for people fleeing the tyranny and economic malaise of nearby countries for the freedom and opportunity afforded by the United States. Miami became ground zero for this process and\, in the process\, was transformed into a flourishing international city. \nWith its increased urbanity came a cultural renaissance and a rebirth of venerable center city neighborhoods. \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speaker:\n\n\n\n\nPaul S. SUMMARY:Miami Mythical Mornings: Guided Tour with Islandia Journal's Fola Akinde
DESCRIPTION:Journey to the world of mythic creatures as you explore the stories behind some of Miami’s most fantastical beings during this special program series. \n\n\n\nReflect upon the lore and legends surrounding mythical creatures on a tour of the exhibition with Coordinator of Education Programs and Community Engagement\, Ingrid E. Argueta in conversation with Fola Akinde\, a Miami-based interdisciplinary artist focused on ideas of Black hauntology as it relates to memory\, history\, and conceptions of liberation and the first artist-in-residence of Islandia Journal: a (sub)tropical periodical of myth\, folklore\, history\, ecology\, cryptozoology\, and the paranormal. \n\n\n\nMythic Creatures: Dragons\, Unicorns & Mermaids traces the natural and cultural roots of some of the world’s most enduring mythological creatures from Asia\, Europe\, the Americas\, and beyond. This amazing exhibition includes imaginative models\, paintings\, and textiles\, along with other cultural objects from around the world ranging from Chinese shadow puppets to Greek coins that bring to light surprising similarities in the ways people around the world have been inspired by nature to envision and depict these strange and wonderful creatures.  \n\n\n\nProgram includes general admission to the museum. \n\n\n\nMembers: $15\, Non-Members: $25\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers:\n\n\n\n\nIngrid E. ArguetaCoordinator of Education Programs and Community Engagement\n\n\n\nIngrid E. Argueta was born in Guatemala and immigrated to Miami when she was 7 years old. Although not a native Miamian\, she is a 305-er at heart. Ingrid has remained true to her indigenous roots and is passionate about Native American history and culture. She is best known for her eco-history tours of Miami’s historic sites\, neighborhoods\, and waterways. Ingrid currently serves as Museum of Miami’s Coordinator of Education Programs and Community Engagement and has been with the museum for 10 years. \n\n\n\n\n\nFola Akinde2023 Islandia AIR\n\n\n\nFola Akinde is a Miami-based interdisciplinary artist focused on ideas of Black hauntology as it relates to memory\, history\, and conceptions of liberation. Their Nigerian cultural background has inspired an interest in archives and research related to the Black diaspora\, including history and folklore related to Nigeria\, the US\, Caribbean\, and Latin America. \n\n\n\nFola’s work was featured in the Spring Undergraduate Exhibition at SAIC Galleries\, and they were awarded an Ellie from Oolite Arts in 2022. Much of their work is focused on the importance of expanding the idea of what an archive is\, its accessibility\, and how that documentation can play a role in (re)assemblage of imagery and memory. Incorporating archival items like found imagery\, objects\, writings\, and ephemera\, Fola has reconfigured their own conceptions of narratives\, mythology\, and illuminate connections to sites and spiritual practices. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibilityTo request materials in accessible format\, sign language interpreters\, and/or any disability accommodation\, please contact Hana Squires\, Accessibility Coordinator\, at accessibility@museumofmiami.org or call (305) 375-1621 at least two weeks in advance of your visit to initiate your request. SUMMARY:10 Days of Connection: Miami Story Exchange
DESCRIPTION:What is a story exchange? This is an opportunity to exchange personal anecdotes with others and connect deeply. We’ll ask you to sit with a stranger\, tell your story\, then listen to theirs. We will reconvene as a group and each participant will retell their partner’s story in the first person. At the end of the program\, you’ll have an opportunity to reflect on your experience and record your story in our Miami Stories Recording Booth (this is optional). \n\n\n\nWe will be sharing stories about Miami! Take a look at your photos (either physical copies or on your smartphone) and choose a photo that captures a Miami-specific story. During the workshop\, you’ll be asked to share this photo and why it’s meaningful. Here are some prompts to guide you: \n\n\n\n-     Share a photo of a childhood memory in Miami \n\n\n\n-     Share a photo of when you first arrived in Miami \n\n\n\n-     Share a photo of your favorite place in Miami \n\n\n\n-     Share a photo that feels uniquely Miami \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCapacity is limited and registration is required. \n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\nThis Connection Event is organized by the museum’s Miami Stories initiative. The Miami Stories initiative collects stories about Miami’s past\, present\, and future. Through this oral history project\, Museum of Miami documents life in the Magic City through both written submissions and audio recordings\, which are preserved in the museum’s archive\, and shared online and through local media outlets.

Known in the 1940’s\, 50’s and 60’s as a playground for wealthy and well-connected\, Stiltsville was once home to the now infamous Crawfish Eddies and Bikini Club. Learn how this once vivacious community on stilts dwindled down to the seven houses that remain today. Dr. George will narrate and share stories of notorious gangsters\, stunning graffiti\, and fabulous parties while guests cruise past the Cape Florida Lighthouse\, Key Biscayne\, and the City of Miami. \n\n\n\nToday\, Biscayne National Park and the Stiltsville Trust work together to support the preservation of the remaining Stiltsville houses so that future generations are able to experience its unique history. \n\n\n\nIndividual charcuterie boxes from Miami Grazing Company will be served. Water and soda service included in ticket price. Additional light snacks and drinks available for purchase from Island Queen Cruises. Ticket includes complimentary family pass to Museum of Miami. \n\n\n\nFeatured Speaker:\n\n\n\n\nPaul S.
