A Michigan native\, Erin followed her passion for marine science to sunny Florida where she earned her Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies from Rollins College and Master’s in Marine Conservation from the University of Miami’s prestigious Rosenstiel School of Marine\, Atmospheric\, and Earth Science. With over eight years of experience at conservation organizations nationwide\, Erin brings a wealth of knowledge about marine ecosystems and a contagious enthusiasm for protecting our blue planet. She develops and leads Miami Waterkeeper’s hands-on education and outreach initiatives\, empowering students of all ages to become advocates for South Florida’s treasured waterways. \n\n\n\n\n\nMelissa LauEducation and Outreach AssistantMiami Waterkeeper\n\n\n\nBorn and raised in Miami\, Melissa pursued her passion for environmental studies\, earning her associate’s degree at Miami Dade College before transferring to Florida International University\, where she obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Environmental Studies. While studying the different ecosystems in South Florida\, she became deeply interested in how individuals and communities interact with these environments and how they care for these places\, bridging her research interests in environmental studies and social science. Using a method called photovoice\, Melissa engaged Miami residents in capturing their emotional connections to the Miami River through photography and personal narratives. Her work highlighted the community’s relationship with the river and served as a catalyst for advocating further protection and preservation efforts for this historic yet often overlooked waterway. Melissa continues to educate the public about the significant role that the Miami River plays in the community through her role as an Education and Outreach Assistant at Miami Waterkeeper. \n\n\n\n\n\nPaul S. SUMMARY:Sold Out: Stiltsville & Key Biscayne Sunset Cruise
DESCRIPTION:Join Museum of Miami’s Resident Historian\, Dr. Paul George\, as he recounts the history of Biscayne Bay. Discover the storied past of Stiltsville\, a series of colorful wooden houses built on the flats of the bay and located inside Biscayne National Park. Known in the 1940’s\, 50’s and 60’s as a playground for the wealthy and well-connected\, Stiltsville was once home to the now infamous Crawfish Eddies and Bikini Club. Learn how this once vivacious community on stilts dwindled down to the seven houses that remain today. Dr. George will narrate and share stories of nefarious gangsters\, stunning graffiti\, and fabulous parties while guests cruise past the Cape Florida Lighthouse\, Key Biscayne\, and the City of Miami. Today\, Biscayne National Park and the Stiltsville Trust work together to support the preservation of the remaining Stiltsville houses so that future generations can experience its unique history. \n\n\n\nWater and soda service is included in the ticket price. SUMMARY:Sold Out - Stiltsville & Key Biscayne Cruise
Today\, Biscayne National Park and the Stiltsville Trust work together to support the preservation of the remaining Stiltsville houses so that future generations are able to experience its unique history. \n\n\n\nEnjoy a special presentation by environmentalist Andrew Otazo\, who once carried a 35-pound backpack of mangrove trash the length of the Miami Marathon to raise awareness about South Florida’s marine pollution problem. View “Backpack with litter collected from Bear Cut Preserve\, Key Biscayne 2019\,” currently on view at Museum of Miami. \n\n\n\nWater and soda service included in ticket price. SUMMARY:15th Annual Presidential Symposium –Civil War and Immigration
DESCRIPTION:While the Civil War erupted over—and ultimately brought about the destruction of—domestic slavery\, it was fought on the battlefield not only by black and white American-born soldiers\, but also by hundreds of thousands of foreign-born immigrants. By enlisting to save the Union\, these new arrivals affirmed their loyalty to their adopted country. In turn\, the war and its tremendous loss of life encouraged President Abraham Lincoln to expand immigration from Europe to fill the depleted ranks of both the military and private industry. Quickly winning the right to vote\, German- and Irish-born voters forever changed the face of U.S. elections. With a focus on Lincoln and his impact on immigration policy\, this symposium will look back and explore the surprising role of immigration and immigrants on the battles and politics of the Civil War era and beyond. With the issues of migration and citizenship still under debate in 21st-century America\, we will discuss how the lasting effects of these policies are still felt across the nation and in South Florida. \n\n\n\nSupport for this program is generously provided by Jean & Bill Soman and David Lawrence\, Jr. – The Children’s Movement of Florida. \n\n\n\nThe Presidential Symposium will take place from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and a reception will follow from 4:00-5:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nIn partnership with Books & Books\, Harold Holzer’s newest book Brought Forth on This Continent will be available for purchase. Additional related titles by panelists will also be available! \n\n\n\nRegister here \n\n\n\nAccessibilityASL interpretation will be available during the program. SUMMARY:Sold Out - History in the Grove: Charles Avenue Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Discover the fascinating history of one of Miami’s original settlements\, Cocoanut Grove\, as you stroll down its tree-lined streets. Reflect upon the legacy of the neighborhood’s early residents\, including E. W. F. Stirrup and Mariah Brown. Hear from community stakeholder J.S. Rashid\, President & CEO of SECTOR Public Private Partners\, Inc.\, who will share his personal story in calling Coconut Grove home. \n\n\n\nTour will include a visit to The Barnacle Historic State Park grounds. She is best known for her eco-history tours of Miami’s historic sites\, neighborhoods\, and waterways. Ingrid currently serves as Museum of Miami’s Coordinator of Education Programs and Community Engagement and has been with the museum for over 10 years. \n\n\n\n\n\nJ.S. Situated on the shore of Biscayne Bay\, this was the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe\, one of Coconut Grove’s most charming and influential pioneers. Munroe preserved the forest on his land\, cutting out only a winding buggy trail through the hammock — barely wide enough for one vehicle. As a result\, the property contains many large\, old trees. Left in its natural state\, The Barnacle Historic State Park appears much as it did in Munroe’s day. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeeting Location:In front of The Barnacle Historic State Park3485 Main Hwy\, Miami\, FL 33133\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Information\n\n\n\nPlease see below for additional information regarding the tour.
