SUMMARY:Lecture—Annette and Rudi Rada: Photographing Mid-Century South Florida and the Caribbean
DESCRIPTION:Explore the photography of Annette and Rudi Rada with curator and University of Miami professor\, Dr. Victor Deupi. Gain new insights into the exhibition as you take a closer look at some of the featured works. \n\n\n\nPresented in conjunction with the exhibition Annette and Rudi Rada: Photographing Mid-Century South Florida and the Caribbean. \n\n\n\nAnnette and Rudi Rada: Photographing Mid-Century South Florida and the Caribbean celebrates the renowned husbandand-wife photographer duo\, Annette and Rudi Rada\, whose work has profoundly shaped our understanding of South Florida and the Caribbean during the latter half of the 20th century. Through nearly three decades of prolific documentation\, the Radas captured the architectural and societal transformations that defined Miami’s evolution from a post-war city to a tropical metropolis. Their photography not only chronicles the rise of distinctive regional styles but also offers a nuanced perspective on mid-century life. The exhibition delves into their impactful portrayals of Miami’s modern\, tropical vernacular\, their ethnographic exploration of indigenous communities\, and the cultural dynamics of the Caribbean and South America. \n\n\n\nCapacity is limited. SUMMARY:History Talks: Miami’s Boom Era Communities—Coral Gables
DESCRIPTION:Journey through time during our History Talks program series! History Talks delves into the layered histories of Miami and greater South Florida. Hosted by Museum of Miami’s Resident Historian\, Dr. Paul S. George\, and presented in conversation with a community stakeholder\, this lecture series will explore the history of some of Miami’s boom era communities—Miami Shores\, Coral Gables\, Opa-locka\, and Hialeah.  \n\n\n\nA History of Coral Gables with Dr. George in Conversation with Dorothy M. Wallace\n\n\n\nCelebrate Coral Gables’ centennial anniversary as you reflect upon the history of The City Beautiful. Learn about the community that George Merrick designed and the legacy of the early Black laborers who built it. View archival images of some of Coral Gables’ most notable landmarks\, including the Venetian Pool\, Biltmore Hotel\, and DeSoto Fountain. \n\n\n\nDr. George will be joined in conversation by community member Dorothy Martin Wallace. Mrs. Wallace will share stories of her life living in the McFarlane Homestead Subdivision in the 1950s and as one of the first African American women to integrate the graduate school at the University of Miami. \n\n\n\nCapacity is limited. Seating is available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \n\n\n\nMembers: $20\, Non-Members: $30\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register for Full Series \n \n\n\n\n\nLearn more about History Talks: Miami’s Boom Era Communities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers:\n\n\n\n\nDorothy M. Wallace\n\n\n\nDorothy M. Wallace was born in Morocco\, Missouri and later moved to Miami with her family in 1951. She holds a Batchelor’s Degree from Lincoln University and attended University of Miami’s School of Education\, becoming one of the first two African Americans to receive a Master’s Degree in 1963 from the university. With a distinguished career in Miami-Dade County Public Schools\, she has served as a teacher\, chairperson\, assistant principal\, and in 1969\, integrated the staff of Northeast Area District Office\, Miami-Dade County Public Schools as the Assistant Coordinator of Student Services. Dorothy is\, perhaps\, however\, best known for her pioneering work with teen parents. In 1972\, she was selected to lead Continuing Opportunities for Purposeful Education (COPE) Center South\, an alternative educational program. As a reflection of her leadership\, COPE Center South was renamed Dorothy M. Wallace COPE Center South in 1997. Being one of the “first” in many areas\, Mrs. Wallace has a legacy in integrating many clubs\, organizations\, and professional associations\, thus paving the way for other women and minorities. She attributes her parents’ work ethics\, values\, and entrepreneurial spirit as the guideposts of her life. \n\n\n\n\n\nPaul S. George\, Ph.D.Resident Historian\n\n\n\nFor over three decades\, Museum of Miami’s Resident Historian Dr. Paul S. George has toured his way to local\, national\, and international acclaim with his continuing series of historic tours. Through walking\, coach\, and boat tour experiences\, Dr. George has welcomed tour participants on a memorable journey of South Florida through its historic neighborhoods\, landmarks\, and sites. As a Miami native\, author\, and former college professor\, Dr. George has gained fame for his uncanny ability to recall the most impressive details about the people and places that make South Florida so unique. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Information\n\n\n\nPlease see below for additional information regarding the program. SUMMARY:History Talks: Miami’s Boom Era Communities—Hialeah
\n\n\n\nA History of Hialeah with Dr. George\n\n\n\nCelebrate the 100th anniversary of the City of Hialeah! Once known as the Gateway to the Everglades\, this community was applauded for its world-famous racetrack at Hialeah Park—which attracted notable figures such as Winston Churchill\, Princess Grace of Monaco\, and Elizabeth Taylor—and its once larger-than-life welcome sign featuring the likeness of Jack Tigertail\, a Seminole tribal member. \n\n\n\nDr. George will be joined in conversation by Hialeah Public Libraries Librarian Adolfo B. Martin\, who will share his insights into the library’s collections. Conversation to be moderated by WLRN’s Helen Acevedo. \n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with Hialeah Public Libraries\, City of Hialeah\, and WLRN. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMembers: $20\, Non-Members: $30\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Register for Full Series \n \n\n\n\nCapacity is limited.
