A Michigan native\, Erin followed her passion for marine science to sunny Florida where she earned her Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies from Rollins College and Master’s in Marine Conservation from the University of Miami’s prestigious Rosenstiel School of Marine\, Atmospheric\, and Earth Science. With over eight years of experience at conservation organizations nationwide\, Erin brings a wealth of knowledge about marine ecosystems and a contagious enthusiasm for protecting our blue planet. She develops and leads Miami Waterkeeper’s hands-on education and outreach initiatives\, empowering students of all ages to become advocates for South Florida’s treasured waterways. \n\n\n\n\n\nMelissa LauEducation and Outreach AssistantMiami Waterkeeper\n\n\n\nBorn and raised in Miami\, Melissa pursued her passion for environmental studies\, earning her associate’s degree at Miami Dade College before transferring to Florida International University\, where she obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Environmental Studies. While studying the different ecosystems in South Florida\, she became deeply interested in how individuals and communities interact with these environments and how they care for these places\, bridging her research interests in environmental studies and social science. Using a method called photovoice\, Melissa engaged Miami residents in capturing their emotional connections to the Miami River through photography and personal narratives. Her work highlighted the community’s relationship with the river and served as a catalyst for advocating further protection and preservation efforts for this historic yet often overlooked waterway. Melissa continues to educate the public about the significant role that the Miami River plays in the community through her role as an Education and Outreach Assistant at Miami Waterkeeper. \n\n\n\n\n\nPaul S.
